Pregnancy Stretch Marks

Skin is the largest organ of the body & is made up of 3 layers: Epidermis, Dermis & Subcutaneous layer. Dermis is the middle layer of the skin comprising of a mesh of collagen & elastin fibres. Both – collagen & elastin are critically important skin proteins –which are synthesized by fibroblasts (cells in the dermis). Collagen provides structure & firmness while Elastin provides flexibility to the skin. Proper functioning of fibroblasts is highly important for overall skin health.

Pregnancy Stretch Marks also known as Striae gravidarum is a specific form of scarring of the skin of the abdominal area due to rapid expansion of the uterus as well as sudden weight gain during pregnancy. As weight increases, collagen & elastin in the dermis are stretched to the point of breaking. As these fibers separate, the skin is stretched & collagen is over produced to form a scar tissue which results in Striation.

About 90% of women are affected. Stretch marks form during the last trimester; usually on the belly but also commonly occur on the breasts, thighs, hips, lower back & buttocks. Over time they may diminish, but will not disappear completely. Stretch Marks have significant physical & psychological impact. The most common therapy is the application of topical creams for therapeutic & prophylactic use. A number of topical treatments are being used for the prevention of stretch marks.
